Spring is prime time for car shopping—dealerships are stocked, incentives are everywhere, and the new car excitement is in the air. But a hasty decision can leave you with a larger payment than you planned for and put a strain on your finances. Avoiding buyer's remorse starts with understanding the full picture and making informed choices every step of the way.

Here are five key strategies to help you buy your next car with confidence.

1. Understand the True Cost of Ownership

Car sticker prices are just the beginning. To truly understand the cost of a vehicle, factor in insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, and potential repairs. A car that fits your budget on paper may exceed it when you consider these additional expenses. Running all the numbers before you shop will ensure the vehicle aligns with your financial goals in the long term.

Also, be sure to compare the costs of buying a brand new car against buying a used model. While the total cost of a new car may be tough to take in at first, consider all the repairs and maintenance that could pop up with a used car. It's not that one choice is better than the other; rather, it's all about what best matches your lifestyle and current financial situation!

2. Set a Budget Before You Shop

Decide what monthly payment and total loan amount work for your budget and commit to it before you set foot in a dealership. Review your monthly finances, including housing, savings, debts, and daily expenses, so your car purchase comfortably fits in your budget.

We're proud to offer our members access to our Auto Loan calculator tool! With this calculator, you can determine how much car you can truly afford and get a rough idea of what your monthly payment could be. We also offer tools to compare the cost of buying a car vs. leasing one, rebates vs. low-cost financing, and more! You can access our Auto Loan Calculators here.

3. Do Your Research

Dealers are masters of sales tactics, so always research market value before shopping. Take time to compare vehicle prices, read reviews, and compare interest rates—so you are fully prepared to negotiate. An auto history report will reveal past accidents, title issues, or maintenance gaps that can also inform your final choice and help you make the best decision. Walking into a dealership informed allows you to bargain with confidence.

Here are some questions that would be good to ask when shopping for your car:

  • Can I see the vehicle's history report (called the CARFAX report in most cases)?
  • Are there any additional fees?
  • Are you currently offering any incentives or promotions?
  • Can I finance with a credit union or bank of my choosing?

4. Explore Financing Before Shopping

Getting pre-approved for an auto loan through American Heritage means you walk in knowing your rate and spending limit—no surprises, and no pressure to accept dealer financing that may cost you more over the life of the loan. Credit union rates are often more competitive than what dealerships offer.

Remember, a pre-approval won't impact your credit score. It's just an assessment of where you currently stand and whether you'd be a good candidate to borrow funds for your loan. You can start a pre-approval with American Heritage here.

5. Consider an Auto Buying Service

American Heritage members have access to auto buying resources that take the guesswork out of pricing and connect you with vehicles at pre-negotiated rates. Our auto buying service can save you time, money, and the hassle of negotiating.

You can also enjoy additional benefits when applying for an Auto Loan with American Heritage, such as:

  • Member Protection
  • GAP Insurance
  • Mechanical Repair Coverage for insurance against high-cost repairs
  • Discounts on auto insurance from agents with Liberty Mutual Insurance and Nationwide Insurance: The Kenney Agency

6. Red Flags to Look Out For

Salespeople are ultimately trying to make a sale, and may use tactics that don't have your best interest at heart. Here are some things to look out for. If at any point you recognize these signs, it may be time to walk away and start looking at another dealership:

  • Any additions or services are bundled and "non-negotiable"
  • You're discouraged from having a mechanic inspect the car or provide their honest feedback
  • You're not told a genuine, out-the-door price for the car

Also, if at any point you feel pressured by the salesperson to make a decision right then and there (i.e. if they say the offer expires today), it may be a good time to walk away. You don't want to make a decision that you could regret for months or years to come.
